Hickling Broad to be flooded

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Controversial plans to combat coastal erosion would see Hickling Broad, the largest of the Broads system and one of Britons most popular holiday spots, flooded and lost to the North Sea.

Unsurprising local residents are outraged. As well as being home to the residents of Hickling village the Broad it self supports  a rich ecosystem including the Swallowtail butterfly, Norfolk hawker dragonfly, Yellow flag, Marsh orchid, Cranes, Shoveler, teal, Goldeneye, Bittern, Marsh harrier, Pochard, Water rail, Cetti’s warbler.

Sailing boats and broad cruisers provide a significant contribution to the local tourist industry and would be hit hard by the flood plans.

The flooding of Hickling Broad is one of a number of options currently being considered in the Natural England report.

Richard Davis, the Norfolk born developer who’s idea this is sees 10,000 homes and 2,000 jobs would be created in the self-contained sustainable community.

Mr Davies now has the financial backing from the bank and has formed a new company called Coltishall Group plc with planners Barton Willmore.
